ScoilAiséiríChríost is proud to be designated a “Green-school” by An Taisce in “recognition of our efforts to work towards a sustainable lifestyle”. Green-Schools is an international environmental education programme, environmental management system and award scheme that promotes whole school action towards a sustainable environment. We have achieved four Green flags to date and are in the second year of our fifth Green flag for “Travel”
Through adopting and implementing Green schools’ initiatives since 2011, we in ScoilAiséiríChríost are educating ourselves about issues concerning the environment and sustainable development.
Participating in green schools has enabled our students to focus on the following global goals:
- Clean water and Sanitation. We worked on our water flag from 2015-2017.
- Affordable and clean energy. Students were educated on the importance of renewable sources of energy and reduced the amount of wasted electricity. (Energy Green flag 2013-2015)
- Responsible consumption and production, protecting water, preventing food waste at home and in school. (Green flags 2011 to date).
- Climate Action– Each year during climate action week the school made great efforts to reduce our carbon footprint. We are taking “huge steps” in school to achieve our travel flag by walking, striding and scooting to school. (Travel flag initiative 2019-2021)
- Life below the water. We achieved our fourth green flag global citizenship and Marine Environment. Sixth class pupils received workshops and talks from guest speakers on the marine environment and how to reduce litter and waste to protect our eco systems.
- Reduce deforestation and plant more trees: Dale Treadwell from Naturally Wild on behalf of Crann and in collaboration with Jane Power from Cork City Council, provided ScoilAiséiríChríost with the ‘Bring a Tree to School’ workshop and Tree Planting in 2014.
